Design Resources
Before beginning any website design. You should first think, sketch,
draw then start all over again. Really consider your idea and how
to present it. It does not matter if you are doing the design or
hiring someone else to do it for you. Think of the Big Picture -
start to finish and everything inbetween. Design must start as concept,
progress to creation and incorporate a dose of reality here and
there. Do not forget Search Engine Optimiation! This should be incorporated
right from the start. It is much harder and more costly to come
back when the design is done at try to optimize then.
Other Online Resources
webmasterworld.com
Forums: a great resource to search for or ask about that one thing
that make's you go "ARRGGHHH!!!"
webmasterfree.com
A nifty little site, they scope out the free software, shareware
and cool demo's. They have something for everyone - from html editors
to graphic editors - mp3 software and more. My new "toy"
is netm@nager
W3C
The World Wide Web Consortium. They set the standards for the internet.
What codeing is appropriate - or acceptable. They test, study and
determine what the new standars should be and what guidelines should
be followed. They are a great resource for specific code format
and what works where (not all codes work in all browsers. For example
if you are in NS4 then
is blinking - if you are in IE5. it is not. And:
html editors : there are about a million choices out there
- from simple (notepad) to expensive (dreamweaver). There is no
"perfect" editor. Try a few out - take them for a test
run and see what suits you the best.
Dreamweaver
Macromedia's html authoring software. I personally use a combination
of Dreamweaver and notepad. It takes awhile to get use to and understand,
but if you take the time it will be well spent.
Allaire's
Home Site Macromedia just merged with Allaire - some say it
is because Home Site was one of Dreamweavers biggest competitors.
Home Site is a highly rated html authoring program - though I have
never used it myself.
Note Pad : found on any Windows PC. The more I learn (it never
stops) the more I use note pad. There are certain things that are
just easier in Dreamweaver, but I always step in after with note
pad and cleanup the code (all html authoring software adds excessive
code that increases load time)
Front Page is
Microsoft's offering in the html authoring wars. Many recommend
it as a perfect First Time tool. Personally - I won't touch it.
I tried and gave up. I must admit - for those willing to really
work at it - Front Page has built itself a steadfast community,
and I have seen some rather excellent sites built with it by professional
designers.
