Search Engine Placement ~ Quick FAQ's
1. Always use meta tags!
Here is a list of the most important tags to use. Meta tags should
always be placed at the very top of the document between the <head>
</head> tags.
Title
(possibly the most important tag there is)
Keywords
Description
Robots
(index, noindex)
*Meta tags are not as necessary as they once were. But some engines
do still look for them even if they don't use them in their determination
for ranking your site. It is better to include properly formatted
meta tags and be safe, than exclude them and risk a penality
2. Make sure to use your Keywords in your Title tag
... and page text! Your Index page, or any page you want to be found
by, should have a minimum of 100 words not counting words like
"and", "to", "for" as they will be considered
Filter words, they will be ignored as common words. Cannot stress
this enough - yet no one seems to listen. With out text your site
has not "content" for spiders to view. Flash sites are great
fun - but all Flash sites are difficult to get indexed across the
SEO board.
3. Submit your url to all the engines.
This means, open up your trusty little browser (make sure you have
all your site information such as url, keywords and description handy)
go to all the engines you want to be found on and one by one Add,
Submit or Suggest your url, answer their questions, and move on to
the next search engines. Be sure to keep a log of where you sumbit,
when you submitted and when you are allowed to re-submit. If you are
not listed in the alotted amount of time, then go back and re-submit
your url. Some search engines will delete your request or give you
a penalty if you re-submit to early. Also, keep track of partner sites.
For example, if you submit to Google's
directory your are also submitting to DMOZ.org
as they are the same.
4. Be Patient!
Consider that there are literally thousands of web sites created
everyday! All of these websites want to be found just as badly as
you do. So they all submit to the same search engines you are. All
you can do is try to develop the best site possible, using all the
tools available (such as meta tags), submit (or have perform a professional
review and submission for you) to all the engines you can find, sit
back and wait (and wait and wait). It can take anywhere from 10 minutes
to 10 months to get listed on some engines.
